Volunteering for nature conservation in Costa Rica

The organisation “First Aid for Wonderful Nature e.V. (F.A.W.N.)” is actively committed to the protection and conservation of flora and fauna, in particular the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of endangered species, especially in Central and South America. Volunteers can work on various projects for a period of up to 12 months as part of a self-financed volunteer programme.

The Daniel Schlegel Umweltstiftung is supporting Silja Unger’s 6-month volunteer programme. Silja has now been on site in Costa Rica since October 2023 and will be actively involved in various FAWN projects until March 2024.

The “Finca Oasis” project in Agua Azul near La Fortuna began reforesting an area of 10 hectares, originally rainforest, back in 2004. It is now a lively and active rainforest, a new habitat for many birds, bats, mammals and fish and at the same time a living tree nursery. Here Silja is working on the maintenance and planting of trees on the finca grounds. Over the next few months, Silja will also be working on a wildlife camera project to document the diversity of the animal world.

For Silja, volunteering is a great personal life experience and her work supports nature conservation and environmental protection in the rainforest – the green lungs of our planet.
