Hessisch-Oldendorf blüht auf!

Hessisch Oldendorf is a small town with around 18,000 inhabitants in the Weserbergland region (Hameln-Pyrmont district). The first planting projects have already been carried out there in the past under the slogan “H.O. blüht auf!” to promote biodiversity through the concrete implementation of a municipal flowering plant programme.

The fruit trees already present in the municipality have shown that people are now once again very interested in regional fruit and are also becoming more open to harvesting it themselves. Harvesting and picking the fruit themselves gives people a direct connection to this food and sensitises them to a more conscious, appreciative approach to local food.

Appreciation for trees is also increasing in general since climate change has become more noticeable. Trees provide shade, filter fine dust, produce oxygen and therefore improve the quality of life.

As the municipality only has limited financial resources, the Daniel Schlegel Umweltstiftung has financed the planting of 15 new pear trees in the Rumbeck district and 5 dogwoods (cornelian cherry) in the Hemeringen district.

The planting was carried out in spring 2023. In July 2023, we were able to see for ourselves during a site visit that the trees had grown well.

The pear trees are spaced 20 metres apart along a small street and will hopefully form the start of a future fruit avenue in Hessisch-Oldendorf.
